Now I must go back and eat a whole heepin' helping of Humble Pie...

Well, a LOT has happened to me since I last posted on LJ. I went to New York at the end of last year for three amazing, fantastic, lonely, painful, boring, wet, cold, sunny and busy weeks. Took a month off in December before starting a new job in the new year. (The less said about The Job From HELL, the better.) Lost the new job in the new year and have been unemployed ever since. Unemployed at first by lack of interest from employers and now by choice as I have decided to take the summer "off".
Plans: Work on projects around the house including - painting the kitchen, hallway, front room, half bath ... whew! Did I miss anything? Now if it would only cool off a bit so I could get motivated to do it all. Trip to Chicago at the end of August for GAA Nationals. Trip to Ireland in September for a bit over 2 weeks. Find a job once I return from Ireland. Trip to New York, NY at the end of November for 4 days or so.
In the Works: Hubby and I have been going to the gym on a regular basis and working with a trainer to boot. It ain't cheap but it also wasn't my idea! We've had gym memberships forever but rarely if ever went. Ah, the Perfect Gym Couple, at least from a gym owner's POV. We paid (dearly) for years but barely put even a mile on any of the equipment. But now, we're both at it twice a week or more. He, of course, is losing weight and visibly looking more fit every day. I, however, still can't fit into any of my Skinny clothes and even still have some pushing just to get into my (version of) Fat stuff. Le sigh.
But Gaelic is in full swing so besides 2 or 3 gym sessions a week I am also on the pitch twice a week running, kicking, hand passing, practicing and swearing for two hours, minimum. We are even doing a plyometric training routine so I'm hoping the pounds are going start melting away soon. (And if it doesn't cool off at least I know that *I* will melt away and soon!) Today, after a bunch of workouts during the week, there's not one inch of me that does not hurt. I ache all over and need to go find some Extra Strength Motrin or somethin'.

One of my favorite days is Talk Like a Pirate Day. I be no good at it but I love it anyway. So much more fun than "Labor Day" or "President's Day", IMO. Now if we could dress like pirates, too, my world she be complete.

Corny but fun...
| Your Pirate Name Is... | Cannibal Ladyfingers | Gaelic Update! Not only did I go to Philly in the pissings of rain (damn you, Hurricane Ernesto!) but I was chosen to start not one but BOTH games we got to play in. My team made it to the Final game in our division though we got spanked in that last game. I didn't mind because I found that I love to play in the mud. Well, it was either that or stay in the hotel so not much choice there. Check out the Na Fianna page for a good photo of us after that final game. It finally stopped raining on the Sunday but the fields were shin deep in muck and mud by then. I plan on posting a report in a bit with maybe some photos to go with. Until then... Avast!

It's that time again!
Time for a long weekend of Irish lilt, Irish craic, Irish culture and Irish sport. Oh sure, there will be plenty of Yanks there (like me!) but we are all going to have a great time and I am stoked for the long weekend. I have a ton of stuff to do today before we leave early, early tomorrow morning for the long flight (with an Atlanta layover) to Philly. Here's hoping I get everything I need to get done, you know, done. Woot! I am so excited, can't you tell?
A few "bummers" mar my horizon; I probably won't get to play in the actual games as I'm really not fit enough to be out there with those younger girls (it's my own fault for not training harder but it's still a bit of a bummer), further we play only one game unless we win that one game and get to go on. Since this is our first year in the Junior A division and not Junior B the odds of us getting to the Championship game are pretty long. Finally, our Saturday game is played at 8am in the morning. 8AM!!! For anyone who is thinking "What? That's not so bad," remember that 8am Philly time is 5am San Diego time. Ouch. And considering we have to be up and to the field at least an hour before for ID checks... double ouch.
But, as I say, it's gonna be a great weekend for football and hurling - the best is watching the little kids play. I hope anyone in the area comes on out to have a look.

You are perfect to rule Mars, because you are both energetic and independent. Like Mars, you seems attractive and bright to others - but you're difficult to pin down.
You are a great thinker, but you only think in the present and ignore the future. Full of enthusiasm and inspiration, you are into your own thing... and rather insensitive to others. |
| You Are A Fig Tree | You are very independent and strong minded. A hard worker when you want to be, you play hard too. You are honest and loyal. You hate contradiction or arguments. So I finally, finally got to watch my first episode of the Sharpe series. (Thanks a ton, Miss_Prickle and family, for getting my sweetie a Netflix subscription!) Having heard a great deal and wanting to see my movie husband in it for so damn long. I had such high hopes and it was... well, OK. (For those who don't know, the show is set in the 19th century with Sharpe [Sean Bean] a regular Joe in His Majesty's Army becoming the main hero even though he is lower class. As they put it - an officer AND a gentleman... dispite that he's a son of whore who grew up in an orphanage but still great hair and teeth and, come on, he's Sean Bean!)
The show itself started off a bit slow and the acting was situated just about for right for early 90's TV. Bean, who I know mostly through his movies, is a great hand at changing his accent but in this he was either told to go ahead and use his own or really is hamming it up. As a Ham Shank (Septic Tank?), I'm not one to say from which part of England an accent comes from compared to another but I'm pretty sure this one is his own. It sounded a lot like the fellas in the The Full Monty which was entertaining but distracting as it kept me thinking of that movie and not the show at hand. (And, BTW, why wasn't Sean in that particular movie? He's got the Sheffield accent and is certainly not bad to look at. And, oh, how I would have loved to see that man strip!) But what really made me laugh was the music. It was a mix of electric guitar (!) and trumpety sounding miltary-of-the-times charges when the action got going. Every time that damn electric guitar started playing though I would get the giggles. So much cheese!
So far I've only seen the one epsiode though I do have a couple others in the queue to be mailed out. I will eventually watch the rest of them but no longer feel I must have them all Right Here! Right Now! Still, I just wanted to say:
I still love you, Mr Bean!!!
Smooches, Wendy

After dislocating my finger, dropping a block of ice on my foot and then dropping a 3 gallon square water bottle on the same foot in the same place (on my foot) all in the space of 3 days last week I've decided to see just how lucky I am. Or if I should go home, go straight home, do not pass Go, do not collect $200, put on my PJs and curl up in bed for the week.

Almost 60% lucky, eh? Not too unlucky - guess I'll stick it out for a few days and see how things go...

I had a pretty good weekend though I'm tired and sore today.
Had to drive up to LA for the Irish Fair (http://www.irishfair.org/html/irish_fair.html) for a Gaelic match against our closest rivals, Orange County. Went up with a teammate early so we could check it out. Such goings on! Tons of young girls (some boys) involved in Irish dancing which was the main attraction from what I could tell. The littlest ones were the cutest though all were fun to watch but I hate the wigs most of them wear! Wigs with tightly coiled, springy and oh-so-fake looking hair that bounces really funny when the girls are up doing their thing. The girls jump up, the hair goes down; the girls come down the hair, just a step behind, goes up. I nearly laughed out loud to see it. We did spot a few girls in their own much curled hair which while still "unnatural" at least looked better, IMO.
The game started late due to Na Fianna (my team!) not all arriving on time although the OC team wasn't all there either when we were scheduled to start at 2pm (being late seems to be such an Irish thing...) but, eventually, start we did. We absolutely killed them the first half. My position is defense so I hardly touched the ball at all; though I did get it once and was attacked by 4 OC players who knocked me on my ass. Damn you new people who don't know how to play the sport!! Pushing and shoving = fine. Grabbing and throwing me on the ground = foul. The two coaches mixed the teams up a bit for the second half (we gave them our 4 best players) which so the second half was a lot tougher especially on our defense. I'm still tired and sore from the hits, blocks and running I did.
I was thankful though that the heat wave we were supposed to have over the weekend did not hit on Saturday like it was supposed to. It was hot and muggy in Irvine on Saturday but not nearly as bad as San Diego on Sunday. Between the weather and trying to recoup from the game I did a whole lot of nuthin' yesterday. (Even my fingers are bruised! Gah, I'm getting too old for this shite.)

I was a busy bee this weekend: it was hot out so I closed up the house, cranked the A/C and did some major cleaning up of my 2 story abode. A marathon of the X-Files threatened to stop me in my tracks but only succeeded in slowing me down a bit. (Man, I loved that show.) Still managed to get in 8 hours of cleaning, scrubbing, reorganizing and just general house work. Unfortunately that was only the second floor - and I'm still not done.
An unusual occurrence, well, occurred on Sunday - my SO was home from work. Other than for prearranged Special Occations, I cannot remember the last time this has happened. (Side note: the Mr has a new work schedule so he sometimes has time off on Sundays now though he rarely takes it and/or ends up working anyway.) I had thought we'd get to spend some quality time together, maybe clean up the rest of the house first thing and then head off for some fun hanging out time, just us. Um, no. Apparently the U.S. Open was what was going on. The good news - I got all the downstairs cleaned. The bad news - I did it on my own.
I suppose, to be fair, I never really asked him to help; though after about 4 hours of him watching TV and me doing chores, he did notice the sweat dripping, the muttered cursing and the house rearranging itself into order and ventured a tentative "Can I help?" At this point, I sent him upstairs to watch his show while putting away his clean clothes. Plus, the Mr works hard, really hard, making sure all of Southern CA is mobile so a complete Day Off is rare for him and he really, really does deserve to just veg out sometimes. We did get to spend some quality time with the family that evening, too, which was pretty much the highlight of my weekend. Got to chat with the family newly weds as well as my brother and his family all while sitting outside in the sunsine at a restaurant eating pretty decent Mexican food.
Overall, it was a productive weekend.

I gotta ask, what does "Do you eat at restaurants several times a week?" have anything to do with anything?
